Okay- it’s time to set the record straight… and share the story behind all of this “Kitty” business you read about on my blog… or on Kitty’s blog. The challenge… is to try and make this interesting… because really, the story is not so great… but for some reason the nicknames just stuck. And now, they’re ours… and I love em’.
It all started with a cat that belonged to my sister-in-law, Suzanne. The cat’s name was Emmy (she recently went to her scratching post in the sky). When Suzanne would refer to her kitten in an endearing way… every now and again it came out “emers kitty”. Well… as an endearment… those close to me often call me Amers… and you see the connection between Emers and Amers… and one time Alece called me “amers kitty”. We laughed, and it stuck. Slowly but surely she became Lizzy Kitty (cut us some slack… the name “alece” was a little hard to work with) and then our husbands followed suit as Davers Kitty and Nigel Kitty. To add to all the kitty confusion… Niel and Alece together are “the Kitties” and so are Dave and I. So yup… I can say “babe, we’re going to the Kitties for dinner”… and Alece can say the same thing. We also adapt the nicknames… so “kitten” is acceptable too… and a whole assortment of other options.
Truth be told… I’m a little posessive of this kitty-nickname stuff. I’m tempted to show my claws when innocent bystanderds (most recently, my loving mother) try to use the nicknames to refer to any of the four of us. It just doesn’t work. And, our nicknames have taken their fair share of criticism. My sister says we’re too old for nicknames and that they creep her out. Others shake their heads. But when something like this just sticks… it sticks…so we are what we are… and for us… that means we’re the Kitties.
There you have it.

I love it. I think it is great, and loving and fun and important.
Thanks for sharing the story.

O.K.- Let me set the record straight. Not to old for nicknames, but THOSE names sound like something a husband/wife, girlfriend/boyfriend call each other….that’s what creeps me out.(and Doug too)
AND, Suzanne called her cat that cute name…not a person-or her girlfriend. But whatever floats your boat. I “tuned in” today to see if you wrote about your latest “Amy” adventure- not yet.
You know I love you! XOXOXO
-your sister

I love it, it shows how much you all love eachother…..So, what’s your new adventure? I’ll share mine but we haven’t made it public so you’ll have to respond in an email!
We are adopting!!! The application is officially in and the process has started! We pray that we will be bringing our son home from Ethiopia in 2009 or early 2010!

I have wondered about that! Thanks for clearing it up. It does seem like it could be a bit confusing at times – but FUN confusing.
Does your latest “amy adventure” have anything to do with Kitties by chance? like four kittens, neat in a row, tatooed to your back?

Wow- Tracy… claws out!!
Amy… no, I promise… my new tattoo has nothing to do with cats… but the new tattoo is my latest adventure. I’m giving it some time to heal and then I’ll do a “reveal”…meaning and all…in a post.

i love our non-story story. and that we have nicknames for each other that raise eyebrows. (husband/wifeness?! WHA???) and that we got “kitty friends forever” inked on us.

Well, I think it’s sweet. It’s always hard to put your finger on where a nickname comes from…sometimes it’s something intangible that just feels right.
My Luke has MANY nicknames from his big brother – the most frequently used nickname is “Weegs.” It was an evolution of language just like the emers-amers. Andrew loves to play with language and sounds and make up words. It’s fun and cute. The only time it’s been hilarious is when we met some new people who asked Andrew what his brother’s name is and he replied “The Weega-meister.”

Oh – and just for the record: I prefer Aim to Amers. I’ve been calling you Aim for years.

It is so perfect because you just can’t make this stuff up. I love it! I understand what you mean about the whole exclusivity thing – totally get it. Thanks for sharing.

I know…it is so weird when others pick up special nick names….I just couldn’t call either of you Kitty…which I am completely fine with… (and I am sure you are too). hmm I have been thinking of a tattoo as well….I look forward to the story and hearing how the “pain” was!

So when you address eachother as kitty, like “hey kitty” does the other say “meow?”

Crack Me Up!! This totally has me laughing out loud…

I am so glad that you have special names for each other. It’s a great example to me to cherish the friendships I have. Although none of my friends I could call Kitty. But. I love this

Thanks for sharing about the Kitty’s! My hsuband has tearms of endearment for me too. It is hilarious when my 3 yr old calls me Idaho or B-Cakes (short for baby cakes). You are very lucky to have such a great friend. They are hard to come by.

Love the story, but I’m slightly confused…
So, if I’m sending Alece an email asking how y’all are doing, am I allowed to call you Kitty? Can I say “How is your time with Kitty?” Or not. I mean. Don’t worry – I don’t do that often, and she’s never slapped my hand on it. But it is your nickname and all, as you’ve so eloquently explained!

Glad we got that straight. I was all kind of confused.
