Sep 22 Leadership Day

Ellie was sleeping in my arms with her head against my chest as the singing started.  The effortless harmonies and the rhythmic clapping made my heart dance…there’s nothing like a large group of Africans singing together.  I looked down at my sleeping daughter and wondered if somewhere in her heart or her spirit…she was dancing too.

As a family, we attended Leadership Day with the staff and interns of Thrive Africa.  As part of their Leadership Summit program, this was a special event for approximately 300 students selected from the fifteen schools Thrive is currently working in, because of their leadership potential.  They were challenged to be leaders, while also being learners… through vibrant teachings and small group discussion.  These kids filled the building with palpable energy and singing that left me speechless.

When we headed to QwaQwa for this event… I was not prepared for my daughter to have celebrity status just on the basis of being so adorable… but that is exactly what happened.  She was like a magnet for affection from total strangers… but I loved watching how she brought people joy just by being.  Here is a glimpse at a few of her fans…

I can feel the joy you have being in Africa…even all the way over here.

I clearly remember this one moment my third or fourth year in Botswana. I was standing in the middle of the drama pod waiting for our scene looking down at the sand. I then looked up at the sky, took a deep breath and rejoiced thinking, “I’m in Africa”.

One of the few memories that makes my heart tingle and soar at the same time is being surrounded by Africans and their rythms and harmonies. Their effortless melodies were more beautiful than any I’ve since encountered. It’s a taste of heaven for sure.

sometimes just being is enough….like a hug or smile without words can comfort a heart. God has been showing me lately that using no words IS better than my constantly running mouth. yes, there is a time and place for words….but He is showing me that I also need to learn the art of loving without words.

as always, your writings encourage my heart. I have enjoyed my time today getting caught up with the Kitties after my being gone so much this month.
