There are a few things that are literally with you for your entire life… and your name is one of them. For me, choosing a name for an anticipated child is such a weighty responsibility. It’s important to me to choose a name that has meaning and depth… something that is already a reflection of what I feel and know about this child just through the time we’ve spent sharing my physical body and the time I’ve spent praying for her. Early on in this pregnancy, Dave and I decided that we wanted our child’s name to be all of these things to us… while also being a tribute to someone dear to us. So my daughter will have the first name of a treasured friend and she will share the middle name of my great grandmother. And now, you can call her by name… Alece Sophia. Many of you that read my blog know the treasured friend who is my daughter’s namesake… and here is a small glimpse of why we’re naming our daughter after her…
I met Alece in 1996 while we were preparing to go on a summer missions trip with Teen Mania to Botswana, Africa. We had one of those instant connections… we met as we were packed into this church room in Miami, Florida, that would be our home for a long weekend of leader’s training… while sprawling out our sleeping bags on the tile floor. Looking back, I smile knowing that was such a divine moment. We spent the next month together overseas and forged a friendship that has grown over the past decade- through many different seasons of togetherness and physical distance. And through the passage of time and the creation of lots of memories… this is what I know to be true about Alece… which is part of the legacy attached to my daughter’s name…
- Alece’s life reflects that she loves God… in a real way that transcends “religion”
- Alece dreams big and she doesn’t stop there… she lives big… putting those dreams in to action
- Alece’s life is other-focussed… she is being the change we all want to see in the world
- Alece is genuine… there’s no masquerade here… and just by reading her blog you know that she’ll show you both her “gritty” side and her “glorious” side… and the full spectrum of those opposites that she experiences in her life as a missionary (www.gritandglory.com)
- Alece is an amazing friend… in ways that are so beyond what sounds like a phrase in a hallmark greeting card. Alece is part of my life- part of my family- and God has used her to shape me in to more of who He created me to be… and that’s just awesome.
I could go on and on… and those of you that know Alece could join me in creating an incredibly lengthy list of what is already her living legacy (feel free to add your thoughts in the comments!!). So I’ll close… just by saying this… I love you Kitty… and thank you again for the privilege of gifting my daughter with your name.

Love the name choice!
when my friend was naming her triplets she had a tough time trying to find SIX names all at once. And then her sister ended up “steeling” one of her names. It is tough naming a child….they will have it ALL their lives! It’s not just a dress she will wear for a family photo or her aunt’s wedding.

I love it! I’m really into the meaning of a name so I couldn’t resist looking Alece Sophia up -
Alece = noble
Sophia = wisdom
I can’t think of a more perfect name for a baby Riep!!
Oh, and as a random side note: I lived in Miami in 1996 when you were there

This is wonderful Amy!
How privileged you are to have such a good friend. And what better way to honor her than naming your baby girl after her? It is truly a beautiful thing.

Oh my! What an honor for Alece – I am just getting to know this lady. although you have to admit, the name “Indian Lake Papa”‘ would have a different ring to it – or “mama” for a girl!

Hi Amy -
I see you all the time commenting on Alece’s blog … and she sent us over here.
This is amazing. Quite the tribute. It got me all choked up! What a beautiful name, too.
I will say, as being one who was named after someone … it does mean something. I was named for the lady who led my Mom to the Lord. I didn’t think about that much when I was little. But I do now. To have a namesake that made that much of a difference in my Mom’s life, in my life, in my kid’s lives … the gift keeps on giving … and I feel, in a way, like that legacy is required of me. Kind-of a ’shoes to fill’ thing. But not in an intimidating way. In an inspiring way. So … blessings to you and your baby Alece.
