For the past week or so- Silas has been in to demonstrating feats of strength. As I watch him…his actions speak to me about his all-boy nature. I see his need to conquer, to master, to test himself, to push himself, and to try with all his might to do the temporarily impossible. Some of these feats have included moving end tables, pushing around kitchen chairs, lifting 2-liters, and most entertainingly… crushing things (don’t worry- he’s learning about behavioral limits too). The most crushable things he’s discovered so far are goldfish crackers and chex cereal. However, today at lunch he found immense delight in squishing watermelon in his hands until it “burst” and the juice went all over his tray and slid its way down his arms. He raised his clenched fists, with watermelon mid-squash, and I just cracked up and said, “baby- you’re totally hulking out!” He was grinning from ear to sticky ear…and it was truly a sight to behold.
Last night, I met my sister’s neighbor, who has triplets that are Silas’ age (um, hello- can you even imagine?!?!). She has two girls and one boy and we immediately started talking about how different boys are from girls. Her simultaneous parenting of both sexes made her an “expert” in my opinion…but it was funny how her son and Silas are in to doing the exact same things. After our talk, I was mentally coming up with a boy-toddler creed. I haven’t perfected it yet…but if I were seriously going to write it out…these would definitely make the cut: If there is a step- they will climb, if there is a hill- they will run, if there is an obstacle- they’ll face it head on and they will repeat the challenge over and over and over again… if they need to get from point A to point B- they run, if they have a cool toy- they’ll drop it to see how loud it will crash. If the sound is loud enough and thus pleasing to the ears… they’ll drop it over, and over, and over again. Boys are constant motion, constant energy, constant curiosity. They find all sorts of activities to indulge their inner Hulks.

I like that… inner hulks! Depending on what they get themsevles into they even turn colors like the hulk.
I remember a colorful encounter that my older boy had with a permanent marker when he was a toddler.

Hey Amy – dropping by. Your previous 3 commenteurs are blog friends of mine, so I stopped by. Actually, I was roommates with Alece in the internship 10 years ago. Anyway – I love your creed! And as I don’t have any kids yet, it makes me think about my husband. I think the nature of little kids (or who we were as little kids) will tell us the most about ourselves and who we really are. This is such a fun observation to me about my husband! He is like that in so many ways. Great thoughts!
